Fall Fever at the Symphony

Dear Friends,

The season is now well underway, and it’s been an incredible journey so far. We started off with a sell-out crowd for the Van Cliburn concert in September, followed by stellar performances by the talented pianist Valentina Lisitsa and the Ray Charles Tribute Band. And we’re just getting started!

A few weeks ago I managed to snag a bit of free time to do some rafting with my daughter Svenja. We are so lucky in Oregon to have access to some of the most beautiful outdoor activities. The White Salmon River was incredible—the massive Columbia River Gorge surrounding us, big rapids (Deadmans’ Corner!) and both of us managing to stay afloat the entire time.

Later that week I attended the 2007 Symphony Ball, An Evening in St. Petersburg. This glamorous evening was hosted by the Friends of the Oregon Symphony, our wonderful group of volunteers led by president Beth Hulsman. We started off the night with a silent auction and cocktail party – lots of opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet some new supporters. There was a live auction as well with some very interesting items – one was the chance to have me prepare a meal in someone’s private home.  I’m now busy digging up my box of Viennese recipes for a big feast some time soon. Speaking of feast, we enjoyed an authentic Russian dinner with entertainment, and then took to the dance floor and danced until after 11pm. Definitely a success, I would say.

I joined KBPS All Classical 89.9 fm in the studio for their fall pledge drive not too long ago. They have been very strong supporters of the Oregon Symphony for a long time and I always enjoy seeing them in person and doing whatever I can to help them in their efforts. Just like us, they survive on donations from supporters who love classical music. Tune in before the next classical concert and check out our classical concert previews on Thursday nights—it’s a great way to get ready for our concerts at the Schnitz, as well!

See you soon,

Carlos
