Making a Business Case
Dear Symphony Patrons:
As a vital cultural asset to the community, it is logical that the Oregon Symphony is deserving of support from businesses who benefit from that vitality. Not only is the Symphony the second largest arts institution in the state, it is a prime mover in arts education and the centerpiece for professional symphony musicians. Led by world-class artistic leaders and proven community and business leaders, the Symphony is well-known for its inspirational performances for more than 320,000 audience members each year. Less visible are the Symphony's community engagement programs, which provide music education for more than 70,000 children and adults each year. Additional programs "teach the teachers" and provide opportunities for aspiring young musicians.
But the Symphony is also a vital community business asset. As a business, the Symphony employs close to 150 musicians and staff with a budget of over $14 million. In addition, the meals, retail, hotel rooms and parking purchased by those 320,000 attendees contribute a combined economic effect on the community estimated at more than $30 million.
The Oregon Symphony, along with the other community arts institutions, also makes our community a highly desirable place to live—attracting and retaining new residents and skilled employees, as well as encouraging and supporting investment in residences and new business.
As is true with every symphony in North America, the Oregon Symphony pays for less than half of its budget with ticket sales. The other half—thus what you've heard about The 59 Percent Solution*—comes mostly from individuals and businesses who are willing to reinvest in the health of the community and are determined to retain the Oregon Symphony as a vital cultural and business asset.
