FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SYMPHONY ANNOUNCES DEBUT OF SUNDAY ENCORE SERIES

Portland, Ore. … Sunday Encore, a new series featuring Sunday matinee performances of Oregon Symphony Classical evening concerts, launches the first of four full-length concerts on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. when Music Director Carlos Kalmar leads the Symphony in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with pianist Freddy Kempf at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

“With the addition of ‘Sunday Encore,’ we can offer audiences a more diverse set of classical subscription packages,” says Sandra Snyder, Vice President of Marketing. The Sunday Encore series is supported in part by grants from the Jackson Foundation and the Oregon Cultural Trust, investing in Oregon’s arts, humanities and heritage. Media support is provided by The Oregonian. Lufthansa is the exclusive airline for the Symphony’s Classical series.

Sales of subscriptions for the Sunday Encore series have surpassed projected revenue forecasts. There are five percent more total Classical subscribers overall, with the addition of Sunday Encore subscribers to the evening Classical series, and total Classical subscription dollars are also up by four percent, says Snyder. “We’ve heard from some people that attending evening concerts is just not possible because they live out of town or don’t like driving at night; this matinee option has netted us several hundred subscriptions which otherwise might have been lost,” she continues.

The Nov. 6 concert features Kalmar, Kempf and the Symphony performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, considered by many pianists a more challenging work than Rachmaninoff’s third piano concerto, which the Symphony performed last season. The concert also includes Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C major and the Symphony premiere of British composer Thomas Adès’ 1994 work, “…but all shall be well.”

Tickets range in price from $20 to $85 and may be purchased in the ticket office of the Oregon Symphony Customer Service Center (923 S.W. Washington), Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or charged by phone at (503) 228-1353 or (800) 228-7343. For group sales, call 503-416-6383. Tickets also may be purchased at all Ticketmaster outlets (503-790-ARTS) or through Ticketmaster Online, via the Symphony’s Web site at www.orsymphony.org. Service fees may apply.
