NEW BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED;
SEVEN NEW LEADERS REPRESENT BUSINESS, COMMUNITY


Portland, Ore. … Seven community and business leaders representing a broad range of experience and expertise are the newest members of the Oregon Symphony Association Board, Symphony President William Ryberg announced recently. They are: Gerald “Jerry” Hulsman, Michael Wray, Kay Morse, Shirley Papé, Terry Pancoast, Greg Burpee and Principal Cello Nancy Ives.

“The quality of board members an organization attracts is unquestionably one mark of its measure in the community,” said Ryberg. “Each of these individuals brings a unique wealth of knowledge and experience that reflects the community’s excitement for the Oregon Symphony under the leadership of Music Director Carlos Kalmar.”

Maria Pope, newly elected Chair of the Symphony Board, agreed. “This level of leadership will translate that excitement into future prosperity,” she said. “I am grateful to everyone on the Governance Committee, particularly outgoing Committee Chair William Findlay, for their help in securing such an outstanding slate of candidates.”

Other newly appointed board officers include Jerry Hulsman, vice chair; Duane McDougall, vice chair; Susan Keil, immediate past chair; Jim Dulcich, secretary; and Jeff Grubb, treasurer.


Brief Biographies on New Board Members

Jerry Hulsman has been a Symphony contributor since 1986 and is a founding member and past chair of the Symphony Foundation. Retired CEO of Charter Investments, Hulsman is very involved in fundraising activities and recently led an effort to secure major gifts while managing the staff through a leadership transition. He is the recipient of the Symphony’s William J. Fronk Award for Outstanding Service. Michael Wray has more than 30 years of executive experience in a varied corporate arena. A graduate of Columbia Law School, Wray has served on the boards of the Houston Symphony, the Richmond Symphony and the Houston Grand Opera. Kay Morse brings a strong marketing background, which she has already put to use working on the Symphony’s Gala committee. She is involved in a variety of other charitable causes that connect her to a broad network of young community leaders. Morse is a University of Oregon alumna. Shirley Papé has been a supporter of the Symphony since the 1980s. She has a diverse educational background and brings together the best of Oregon; she is an alumna of both Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. She currently serves on several boards, including Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and OHSU, and is very involved in the community. Terry Pancoast is in law practice with Stoel Rives, specializing in estate and business planning. A graduate of Harvard Law School, Pancoast is an adjunct professor at Lewis and Clark Law School. He serves on several boards, including the Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust and Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Greg Burpee, Principal Associate with Macadam Forbes, adds solid business experience to the Symphony board with more than 20 years of sales and marketing experience and 10 years in real estate brokerage and development. . A University of Colorado alumnus, he is an active community leader who also serves as the incoming Chair of the American Lung Association of Oregon and is the father of twin boys. Nancy Ives has been the Principal Cello of the Oregon Symphony since October 2000. She came from New York where she was active in a variety of arts organizations in addition to her own musical pursuits. Nominated and approved by the full orchestra, she is now the third Symphony musician to hold a position on the board of directors.
