FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDUCATION WORKSHOP TO AID MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS
WITH INTEGRATING MUSIC WITH CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Portland, Ore. … A workshop designed to provide middle school teachers with the skills, confidence and content that will enable them to incorporate music into their daily classroom activities will be presented by the Oregon Symphony Education and Community Programs department on Saturday, Jan. 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Reed College in the Vollum College Center. The workshop is free of charge and requires no prior musical training or familiarity.

We all associate the concept of texture with our senses of touch and sight, but what does texture sound like? In this three-hour workshop, middle school teachers can discover how musical texture is created and described. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the roles that this often overlooked concept plays in a variety of musical genres. Teachers will then participate in a series of listening exercises, which will include listening to CDs. The workshop continues with an overview of the teacher’s guide, group discussions of teachers’ past experiences integrating music into the curriculum, including which approaches were successful and which were not. The workshop will wrap up with a strategic planning discussion for incorporating the upcoming Youth Concert theme of texture in music into their curriculum.

Please call the Oregon Symphony Education and Community Programs department at 503-228-4294 for more information, or visit the Symphony’s Web site at www.orsymphony.org.
