FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Portland, Ore. … A workshop designed to provide non-music elementary school teachers with the skills, confidence and content that will enable them to include music into their daily classroom activities will be presented by the Oregon Symphony on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The workshop is free of charge and requires no prior musical training or familiarity.
The three-hour session will encourage teachers to share their relationship with music through small group discussions. The teachers will then participate in a series of listening exercises, which may involve listening to CDs and a live performance by a Symphony musician. The workshop continues with an overview of the teacher's guide, group discussions of teachers' past experiences integrating music into the curriculum, including which approaches were successful and which were not. The workshop will wrap up with a strategic planning discussion for incorporating the upcoming Youth Concert theme (rhythm & pulse) into their curriculum. At the conclusion of the workshop, teachers will have the opportunity to tour the backstage of the concert hall and sit in on a working Symphony rehearsal.
