First season with the Oregon Symphony:

1968-1969

Most influential teacher(s):

So many musicians have inspired me, not just bass players; I am taught something every time I see a performance. But I’m most thankful to Larry Zgong who gave a poor college student free lessons because I worked hard — imagine that!

Earliest musical memory:

Performing at age 10 for my first audiences: my mother, brothers and sisters, cousins, aunts and uncles and being totally accepted as a musician.

"I first knew I would make music my career when ... "

I started to notice other musicians being inspired by my input, leadership and contribution. Basically feeling total respect from my colleagues.

"Other than performing music, I've always thought it might be fun to be a ... "

Landscape architect. I love the freedom one can express in a garden.

Favorite composer and/or period?

My favorite composers are tonal, logical, not too esoteric, and come from all types of music including classical, jazz, opera, Latin and ethnic roots.

What do you enjoy most about performing?

While performing, I become transported from everyday life and drawn into reality as this musician sees it.

Other than playing great music, what do you see as the Symphony's most important role?

To give to all listeners a picture of the world as seen through the minds of composers who became recognized because of the truth and beauty they wrote about.

What is your favorite part of being a member of the Oregon Symphony?

I have the opportunity to work at what I do best and live in an area of the world that offers so much natural beauty.
